Born 15 June 1888 at Sutton, NSW. Second son of George Edward and Ann Southwell.
He was working on Mt Stromlo planting pines when he enlisted in the A.I.F. on 29 October 1915. Farewell functions were held for him at the Protestant Hall, Queanbeyan and at 'Fernhill', his parents' property, before he departed in March 1916 after final leave. A large number of friends and relatives assembled at Queanbeyan Railway Station on the night of his departure to bid him farewell.
Malcolm served in the 20th Battalion and was killed in action near Fleur in France on 15 November 1916. His superior officer, Lieutenant L. Byrne wrote on 30 November 1916 to Malcolm's brother Frederick in the following terms:
| Dear Mr Southwell I regret to have to report that your dear brother 4524 Pte M.M. Southwell of my company was killed in action on the 14th November 1916, while doing his duty for his King and country. All the officers, N.C.O.s and men of his company extend their very deepest sympathy. I would like you to know that he proved himself to be one of our very best and bravest soldiers and was very much liked by all his comrades who now miss him greatly. I remain Yours in sympathy L. Byrne, Lieut. |
