The memorial is a stone, granite and marble pillar. It is surmounted by a polished trachyte platform on which stands a white Italian marble World War I infantryman holding a rifle and standing easy. The statue faces east and is supported by a representation of a tree trunk. Below this is a pedestal of red "Tarana" granite. There are four white Queensland marble columns with carved caps below the pedestal and below them a base of polished granite bearing the names of fallen soldiers. There are three steps of Footscray grey granite. There is a metal flagpole on the north-east corner and a gun on the east side of the monument.
The movement for the erection of a memorial was started in about 1920. It was decided to erect a memorial worthy of the district at a cost of £1,000 and the money was raised by subscriptions. A local committee, of which Messrs A. Humphries and D. Caldwell were secretaries had charge of the scheme. A triangular piece of land in Smith Street, in front of the National Bank, was given by the bank to the district council for the purpose of erecting a memorial on it. The monument was designed, made and built by Messrs Wooles & Carpenter of Warrnambool, in conjunction with Messrs. Oddling & Sons of Sydney and Melbourne.
A crowd of about 1,000, including school children and returned soldiers in uniform, gathered for the opening in fine weather. The Naracoorte Band was in attendance and provided the musical part of the ceremony. Lieut-Col Waite, in unveiling the monument, asked the children to each be its custodians and to protect it from being damaged.
