The memorial is a 3 metre white Angaston marble column on a moulded base supported on three tiers of steps of pink Macclesfold marble. Stone spheres adorn each corner of the base. There are metal plaques on the north and west faces of the column picturing guns and artillerymen. The whole is in a small rose garden bounded by a low circular steel and wire fence.
The monument embodies all South Australian materials and workmanship. The design was by Mr. Edward Davies, architect of Adelaide and the manufacturing and erecting was done by Mr. W. Laycock, Waymouth Street, Adelaide. The white marble came from Mr.Laycock's marble quarries.
A committee was formed headed by Dr. J. W. Yeatman as chairman and Mr. J. W. East as secretary. The total cost of £430 was raised by public subscription. There was not sufficient land on the roadway to allow for the erection of the monument so Court Auburn A.O.F. generously gave a portion of their adjacent property to allow sufficient space for all purposes. The memorial was unveiled on 6 June 1920 in front of 1,000 people. A Returned Soldiers Band led veterans in a street march to the site. Boy Scouts formed a guard of honour.
The order of service was:
1. Hymn 'O God Our Help in Ages Past'
2. Prayer by Rev. E. Pryor
3. Addresses by chairman, ministers and Mr J Millard whose two sons had
died during the war
4. Unveiling by Mr Millard assisted by other fathers of deceased
servicemen
5. Last Post
6. Squad of soldiers presents arms
7. Hymns
8. National Anthem
