The metal entrance gates to the park are supported by two white concrete pillars, each surmounted with a red ball. Metal lettering in the gates spells out "SOLDIERS MEMORIAL PARK".
In 1946 the Returned Soldiers League called a meeting to discuss
what should be done to commemorate the people who fought and died during the
Second World War. It was eventually decided to transform the recreation
gardens at the eastern end of the town into a Memorial Park. The work did
not commence until 1949 and involved the erection of fencing, the construction
of eight tennis courts, the upgrade of the oval, trotting track and cycling
track and the demolition and rebuilding of the grandstand. To complete the
project the RSL donated the Soldiers Memorial gates at the entrance. The
governor of South Australia, Sir Willoughby Norrie opened the complex on 21
November 1951.1
