The memorial is a grey granite obelisk on a 3 stepped base. The lower part of the base is an octagonal shape. The monument, with another memorial, sits in a grassed area in the centre of Vale Street. The area is surrounded by a wrought iron fence and there are two metal flagpoles on the south east side near the entrance to the area.

At a public meeting held during May 1917 a committee was formed which decided to erect a memorial in Cooma to honour soldiers of the town and district who served in the 1914-1918 conflict and the names of those soldiers killed in action, died of wounds or missing, would be inscribed on the monument.  On 25 April 1924 the Foundation Stone was laid by Mrs George Rolfe.  The War Memorial was finally unveiled, without the names of the soldiers, on 25 April 1926 by Mr J A Perkins.  By then the the cost of the memorial had risen to 1050 pounds.  It was not until 1987 that the names of the 53 soldiers from World War I and 30 from World War II were inscribed.  In 1996 the Ernest Corey Memorial was included in the area.  The diorama, created by local sculptor Chris Graham and students, depicts the life of Ernest Corey as a stretcher bearer in France.1
